HANA on Power

The certified combination we manage best: the in-memory ERP on the platform with 99.9999% availability and the vertical scalability HANA demands.

01 · What it is

SAP HANA on IBM Power, made clear.

HANA has been SAP-certified on IBM Power for years — and on Power it performs at its best: massive scale-up, terabytes of memory, PowerVM virtualization to consolidate production, quality and development on the same iron, with a resilience the x86 world doesn't know.

02 · How to use it well

The things that make the difference.

The stack we propose

S/4HANA / ECCthe application
HANA prod
HANA QA
HANA dev
separate LPARs, same iron
Redundant PowerVM & VIOSvirtualization in the firmware
IBM Power11 + IBM storagethe base that never stops
The in-memory ERP, no compromises

Real scale-up

Up to tens of TB of RAM per single instance: the high road for HANA, without splitting the database.

LPAR consolidation

Prod, QA and development on the same system with hardware isolation: less iron, more order.

Zero planned downtime

With Power11 and LPM, firmware and hypervisor updates don't touch the ERP.

Managed SLES for SAP

The reference operating system, with integrated HA clustering, within our managed perimeter.

03 · In depth

Why Power: SMT8, bandwidth and LPARs

On Power each core runs up to 8 threads (SMT8) and memory bandwidth per socket far exceeds x86: for an in-memory engine that means more throughput per core and fewer licensed cores. PowerVM LPARs are SAP-certified firmware virtualization: production, QA and development coexist on the same iron with hardware isolation, and Live Partition Mobility moves a running HANA during maintenance.

  • SMT8 — 8 threads per core: the parallelism columnar engines truly exploit
  • Memory bandwidth — OMI/DDR5 on Power11: the in-memory bottleneck is RAM, not CPU
  • Certified LPARs — PowerVM virtualization supported by SAP in production (note 2230704 and related)
  • Live Partition Mobility — firmware and hypervisor update without stopping HANA
  • Shared processor pools — QA peaks don't steal from production: governed entitlements and capping
  • Scale-up to 32 sockets — E1180: TBs of RAM in a single image — the high road for HANA

05 · Use cases

Where it really pays off.

New S/4 implementations

Greenfield on Power: you start on the right platform from day one.

Refresh from x86

The migration that pays back: consolidation, resilience and TCO in hand.

Mixed IBM i + SAP environments

IBM i ERP and SAP on the same Power: one iron, one signature.

SAP HANA on IBM Power is our signature combination: we design it, migrate it and manage it 24/7.
