02 · The operating systems

A single machine.
All your worlds.

On the same Power platform — in the same machine, under the same hypervisor — partitions with different operating systems live together, each at its best. It's the consolidation that simplifies the data center without compromise.

IBM i

The heart of Italy's management systems: OS, database and security integrated, releases 7.3 → 7.6. Our mother tongue — explored below.

AIX

The enterprise UNIX for the most demanding workloads: legendary stability, Live Update, WPAR and an ISV ecosystem consolidated over decades. Managed with planned TL/SPs.

VIOS

The Virtual I/O Server virtualizing network and storage for all the partitions: redundant dual-VIOS, NPIV and Shared Ethernet. It's the foundation of our zero downtime.

Linux (RHEL · SUSE)

Red Hat and SUSE certified on Power (ppc64le), including SAP HANA on Power: the in-memory ERP on the platform with the highest availability. And OpenShift for the containers.

With PowerVM the IBM i, AIX and Linux partitions share cores and memory dynamically: capacity where it's needed, when it's needed — without separate clusters for each technology.

03 · IBM i

A unique architecture,
designed to last.

IBM i is not just any operating system: it's an integrated platform where OS, database and security are born together. It's the reason why applications written thirty years ago still run today — faster — on the latest hardware.

TIMI — independence from the hardware

The Technology Independent Machine Interface abstracts the programs from the processor: you change hardware generation without recompiling. Application continuity is a project, not an accident.

Db2 for i — the database in the DNA

Db2 is integrated in the operating system: no installations, no endless tuning. Modern SQL, an automatic optimizer and — with 7.6 — FINAL TABLE on UPDATE and DELETE too.

Object-based security

Every element of the system is a typed object: "generic" malware has no grip. Granular authorities, a native audit journal and integrated encryption.

Single-Level Storage

Memory and disk as a single address space: automatic storage management, constant performance and administration cut to the minimum.

Integrated work management

Native subsystems, job queues and scheduling: the system self-regulates under load. Thousands of concurrent users on a single partition, with no additional middleware.

Public roadmap

IBM publishes and maintains a release roadmap with support planned well beyond 2030: today's application investment is protected for the coming decades.

Quantum-safe by design

Post-quantum ML-KEM and ML-DSA cryptography (NIST standards) on secure boot, firmware and migration traffic. A system-wide cryptographic inventory.

Cyber Vault: ransomware detected in <1 minute

Integrated anomaly detection with immutable snapshots on IBM Storage (Safeguarded Copy): the restore point the attacker can't touch.

AI on-chip + IBM Spyre

MMA units in every core for inference in line with the data; from Q4 2025 the Spyre accelerator brings generative AI on-prem, close to the ERP.

Active-passive or active-active clusters with automatic failover: an RTO in minutes, managed and tested periodically.

Db2 Mirror for i

Synchronous database-level replication across two systems: zero RPO and continuous availability even during upgrades.

Immutable vault

Safeguarded Copy on IBM Storage: immutable, logically air-gapped snapshots. The third level, the one ransomware doesn't touch.
