IBM Fusion

The modern infrastructure for AI and containers: data, applications, GPUs and storage in a single turnkey platform on Red Hat OpenShift. From the rack to production in a day, from the container to agentic AI.

01 · The context

Containers are ephemeral.
The data isn't: it's Data Gravity.

In the cloud-native world the applications are born and die in seconds, but the data stays persistent, heavy, hard to move and to protect. IBM Fusion was born to eliminate this friction: it makes the data native to the hybrid cloud exactly like the applications — with bare-metal performance and integrated resilience.

02 · What it is

An intelligent data platform,
in two forms.

Fusion unifies data access, protection and performance for Red Hat OpenShift. The same operational experience, two deployment modes: the integrated appliance or the software on your hardware.

Fusion HCI — the turnkey appliance

Bare-metal compute, network and storage in an integrated rack, with automated OpenShift installation and preconfigured container-native storage. Ideal for new clusters and for on-prem AI: you switch it on, you use it.

Fusion SDS — the software, wherever you want

The same data services as software: on existing hardware, VMware, AWS, Azure or bare metal. To reuse the investments already made and bring the same platform everywhere.

Under the hood there's IBM Storage Scale: the high-performance parallel file system (GPUDirect, declustered Erasure Coding) that gives containers and AI a single logical view of the data — Edge, Core and Cloud. No "data tourism".
03 · Use cases

Three reasons why companies
choose Fusion today.

Agentic AI Factory

On-prem inference and RAG with dedicated GPU nodes: the models run close to the data, with governance and sovereignty. The AI factory, inside your data center.

Data Lakehouse

Structured, semi-structured and unstructured data in a single lakehouse architecture with integrated governance — the data base ready for watsonx.data and for BI.

Modern Application Platform

The exit from VMware with OpenShift Virtualization: VMs and containers on the same platform, the TCO sharply down and the end of the hypervisor lock-in.

04 · Inside Fusion HCI

Bare metal, GPUs and parallel storage:
the AI factory ready to use.

IBM Fusion — data platform architecture
IBM FUSION · THE DATA PLATFORM

Bare-metal OpenShift, installed by itself

Physical worker nodes, high-speed switches and an automated installer: no hypervisor layer, minimal latency on network and disk.

Up to 4 GPU nodes per rack

NVIDIA L40S and H100 NVL or AMD MI210, with high-performance NVMe on every node: inference, tuning and training where the data lives.

Storage Scale + Erasure Coding

A container-native parallel file system with declustered ECE: protection from disk and node failures with 64–78% usable efficiency.

Content-Aware Storage for agentic AI

The unstructured data gets vectorized and queried directly at the storage layer: the RAG accelerates without moving enormous datasets.

05 · Data resilience

Backup, DR and immutability:
integrated, not stuck on.

Native Backup & Restore

Application-aware protection of the OpenShift workloads without complex scripts: policies, scheduling and restore from the Fusion panel.

Immutable, air-gapped copies

Backups on S3 or tape with immutability: effective against ransomware too, consistent with the three-level architecture we bring across the whole estate.

Synchronous Metro-DR

Synchronous replication up to 150 km with a tie-breaker on a third site: business continuity for the monolithic applications and the VMs too.

Compliance NIS2 and DORA: operational resilience demonstrable, not declared — with evidence and periodic tests managed by YoctoIT.
06 · In the real world

Those who've already been there.

Banking · analytics

Resona Holdings (Japan) runs the SAS Viya analytics on Fusion HCI: flexible infrastructure without the burden of building and managing it, with the security the banking sector demands.

07 · Why YoctoIT

Technology makes the difference
only if implemented well.

YoctoIT is an IBM Fusion Certified Partner and works closely with IBM to design OpenShift architectures truly ready for production — and then manage them 24/7, with Yocto Vision's transparency.

01

Assessment

Analysis of the workloads and the requirements: what to containerize, what to virtualize, where the GPUs are needed.

02

Sizing & design

The optimal architecture: HCI or SDS, GPU nodes, resilience and Metro-DR tailored to your SLAs.

03

Deployment & migration

Installation, configuration and data migration — including the exit from VMware — with knowledge transfer to your team.

04

Managed H24

NOC, Yocto Vision monitoring, patching and monthly reports: the platform lives in our managed services.
