Backup & Recovery

The protection engine with the broadest coverage on the market: VMs, databases, NAS, Kubernetes, SaaS and endpoints — deduplicated, encrypted, immutable.

01 · What it is

Backup & Recovery, made clear.

Every real environment is a mosaic: different hypervisors, twenty databases, NAS full of files, containers and SaaS. Commvault Backup & Recovery protects all of it with a single engine: agents and APIs where needed, integrated storage snapshots, global deduplication and server plans that declare the objective — the platform executes, verifies and reports.

Plans, not jobs

You declare RPO, retention and destinations: the plan orchestrates the jobs, you read the reports.

Smart snapshots

IntelliSnap drives the arrays (NetApp, Pure, HPE...): TB backups in minutes, no windows.

Granular restores

From single file to whole VM, from DB row to mailbox: recover exactly what you need.

Continuous verification

Failed jobs retried, copies verified, anomalies flagged: the 0 of the 3-2-1-1-0.

03 · In depth

Dedup, snapshots and transports: why it is fast

Variable-block client-side deduplication cuts traffic at the source; MediaAgents scale horizontally with storage pools on disk or object; IntelliSnap coordinates hardware array snapshots and mounts them for off-host backup (production feels nothing); for VMware the HotAdd/NBD/SAN transport picks itself; the single catalog indexes everything: finding a three-year-old file takes seconds, not afternoons.

  • Client-side dedup — the block already seen doesn't travel: WAN and storage say thanks
  • IntelliSnap — array snapshots + off-host backup: windows zeroed
  • Scale-out MediaAgents — bandwidth grows by adding nodes, not forklifts
  • Single catalog — every object indexed and searchable in seconds
  • End-to-end encryption — in flight and at rest, with external KMS supported
  • Application-aware — Oracle, SQL, SAP, Exchange: consistent, not crash-consistent

Backup that covers “almost everything” leaves out exactly what you'll need: here nothing stays out.
05 · Use cases

Where it really pays off.

Heterogeneous estate

Mixed hypervisors and 20 DBs: one policy.

Giant NAS

Millions of files: dedup and snapshots, not agony.

Kubernetes

PVs and K8s apps inside the corporate plan.
